Counting squares of every size

Grade 3 · Shapes and angles

A shape made of small squares, such as a chocolate bar, a sheet of stickers or a quilt, often with squares missing from its edges. The student counts the squares of every size, counts one size, counts the ones bigger than 1 by 1, or picks the size of the biggest square.

Bigger squares overlap, so the reliable way is to count one size at a time. A square only counts if every small square inside it is there, so the gaps decide which ones fit. The working goes through the sizes in turn.
