Each question gives a part and a whole: the consonants among the letters of a sign, money spent out of the money someone had, minutes out of an hour, grams out of a kilogram. The student writes the part over the whole and simplifies it. Any equal fraction is marked right, and the working shows the simplest form.
The whole is often hidden in a word. "An hour" has to become 60 minutes and "a kilogram" 1000 grams before the fraction can be written, and $2.50 of $20 is easier in cents. On a sign, only the letters count, not the spaces, and the working numbers them on the sign itself.
