Numbers&Me

Ten frames: making 10 and 20

Grade 1 · Addition and subtraction

A ten frame is a 2 × 5 grid of boxes, with a second frame beside it for numbers past ten. Most questions show some counters already in place and ask the student to fill the empty boxes to make 10 (or 20). The rest show empty frames to fill until they show a number.

The starting counters are sometimes packed in from the first box and sometimes scattered, so the student counts the gaps rather than reading off a row.
