Split the total

Grade 3 · Addition and subtraction

Two amounts make a total, such as two children who weigh 51 kg together, or a 43 cm ribbon cut into two pieces. One or two rules narrow it down: the two are different, one is bigger, each is between two numbers, both are odd, or they are less than 5 apart. The student types any pair that adds up to the total and keeps every rule.

There is never just one answer: every question has at least four. The working starts in the middle (half the total) and moves outwards, checking each pair against the rules until one fits, then names a couple of others that work too.
