Each question says what year it is and gives one more fact, such as "Grandma turned 84 this year" or "the library opened in 1968". The student works out the year someone was born, how old someone or something turns this year, the year a round birthday still to come falls in, or how many years apart two people in a family were born.
The working counts on along an empty number line in jumps to easy numbers (1987 to 1990, then to 2000, then to 2021), or counts back from this year, the way the sum is done in the head. The slip to watch for is starting from the wrong year: when a bridge built in 1950 turns 100, the count starts at 1950, not at this year.
