Moving walkway speed

Grade 4 · Ratio, rates and percentages

Someone walks, jogs or runs on an airport moving walkway, a toy robot walks on a conveyor belt, or a child walks along a moving train. The student finds how fast they go past the ground going each way, how many seconds it takes to cover the walkway, or their own speed from how fast they go on it.

Going the same way, the two speeds add; going the opposite way, the walkway's speed is taken away. On a train, walking towards the back still moves you forwards, just more slowly. Every length is set so the time comes out in whole seconds.
