A kitchen scale with a round dial. Some questions ask the student to read the mass the needle points to; others ask them to turn the needle to a given mass.
The dials are labelled only every few marks, so the size of a small step has to be worked out. On the bigger dials, masses are in kilograms and grams, like 1 kg 350 g.
