Something starts as a whole number of a big unit, such as a 1 kg bag of rice or a 3 km walk, and some is used up in the small unit. How much is left, in the small unit?
The subtraction is easy; the step being practised is noticing the two units are different and changing the whole into the small unit first. Sometimes a second amount is taken away as well.
