A map is drawn to a scale such as 1 cm : 2 km, with three towns joined by straight lines that cut across the grid. Given one distance, the student finds another.
Each line is the long side of a right triangle on the grid, so Pythagoras gives its length in centimetres and the scale turns that into kilometres. Every distance comes out as a whole number.
