Compass turns

Grade 4 · Coordinates and maps

A robot, a child in the park, a weathervane, a boat, a bike or the wind faces one of the eight compass points, then turns. The student taps the way it faces now, on buttons set round a compass where each direction sits.

Turns are given in different ways: a quarter, half or three-quarter turn, 45° to 270°, clockwise or anticlockwise, left or right, or "the exact opposite way". The working counts round the compass one point (45°) at a time and moves the arrow with it. A 270° turn ends where 90° the other way does.
