Numbers&Me

Two groups, one total

Grade 3 · Word problems

A group is split in two and each part has its own amount: 3 of the 5 children held 4 jelly beans in each hand, and the rest held 2. The student finds the size of each part, how many each part has, and adds the two to get the total.

There are three places to slip. The split can be a fraction ("a third of the 18 campers"), so the rest has to be worked out. "In each hand" means twice as many each. And sometimes the rest have none, so multiplying the whole group by one amount gives the wrong answer.
